Pickem (beta) development discussion

Looks great :-)

How easy is it to add other sports, specifically English Football (soccer)?

Do you just add the 20 teams in the league and then enter the whole seasons fixtures or do you need to enter each team name each week? Also can it handle a team having more than 1 match a week?

On a Draw Pool, they would have the option to then pick a single winner or pick the 2 teams to draw... the outcome count be one of 3.. team 1 wins, team 2 wins, draw... you would only get a point for picking the correct option out of the 3. If that would work for you, then I will add it to the todo list for the next beta version.

Yep that's exactly what we'd need for soccer :-)

Apologies in advance for not having looked too much into the demo/software, but I have a question. Is this usable/workable for individual sports (boxing/MMA, for example)? Seems like it would be, but not sure....also, do you need to input a full schedule/league in advance, or would you be able to build as events happen (again, I am thinking individual sports, where you may not know a lengthy schedule in advance)?

Yes, it is usable for individual sports as long as those are a one against the other. You would enter in Fighters just like Teams. Then set up a Week as a "bout" and then set each match as part of the bout.... not hard to do at all.. and no, you don't have to set a full lengthy schedule in advance. For example, during the NFL season, I added in sets of weeks by quarter instead of all at once at the beginning of the season. You can add weeks at anytime.

What is the difference between Pickem and Sportsbook?

Pickem is a POOL system that allows members to pick winners of matchups on a weekly basis. Each "week" is scored seperately and then there is an OVERALL leaderboard for an entire season.

Sportsbook is WAGERING (betting) system. You create an event ie Kansas City Chiefs @ Denver Broncos, then you create outcomes for members to place wagers on.. ie,
Chiefs ML 120 to 100
Broncos ML 100 to 120
Chiefs -7 110 to 100
Broncos +7 100 to 110
Broncos win coin toss 2 to 1
Chiefs win coin toss 2 to 1
Tim Tebow completes 10 passes 50 to 1
Champ Bailey gets an INT 5 to 1

etc etc etc.. you can create as many outcomes per event as you need to..

Each outcome has its own set of odds (which can be changed). When a member places a wager, that wager is locked in at the odds at the time of the wager.. they can place as many wagers as they want (as long as they have the money). The Event closes when the real event starts. Once the real event is over, you "settle" by checking each winning outcome.. the system does the rest for ya.

Hope that helps...

I've worked in the ability to now create different types of Pools (Normal, Spread and Draw). Draw Pools let players choose one of 3 options per match (Team A, Team B or Draw). Only thing left to do on the Draw pool is creating a different type of Pick Distribution that works with "draws" factored in. I should have the new version up sometime this week.

Sounds good, looking forward to testing that out

ok... demo has been updated. To see the changes, you will need to make sure you are viewing the 2012 MLS Regular Season pool, so when you login with one of the Demo accounts, go to "Manage My Pools" and set the default pool to MLS.

The "Manage My Picks" view now has 3 different layouts based on Pool Type (Normal, Spread and Draw).

Yep, that all looks good an will work fine with any football website

Been Following this for a while now, do you think it will be ready for the start of the new Premier League season which starts in August?

oh ya, Its already usable... I (and a couple other sites) used it for the full NFL season (Pre Season, Regular Season and Post Season) last year. It will be for sale through the store front in June.

Ok great, I have to ask , what it the performance like, does it add much overhead to the current XF software?

4. The entire concept of pickem is to pick the winner. A Draw is not a win, its a TIE. I am going to add in (at some point) the ability for the Admin to set whether Ties count as Wins (1 point) or Losses (0 points). It also wouldn't be to difficult to customize it to make correct picks worth 2 points and a Tie 1 point (this is something that I may also at some point build into the system)

5. Prediction league software is different than pickem software. At some point down the road, I MAY look into prediction league software ...

I can see the point you're making Bob, all the 'tipping' we've done has been on what you would call a prediction basis. For example with Rugby we gave the options of picking winning margins: 1 - 7, 8 - 14, 14+ for each team or a draw, with 1 point for picking the winner, 2 points for picking the winning margin or 4 for picking a draw - they're a lot rarer than in Football. One of the main reason's for using this system is generally end up with a definite winner at the end of each season.

Would it be possible to do this as a part of Pickem, an extra 'addon' module for it or as a separate addon altogether. It would seem to someone such as myself with no coding skills that you have the majority of the work done in the Pickem addon - how much extra it would involve though I don't know.

I'll be watching this thread with interest though and depending on your answer to my above questions will look at purchasing either Pickem or a 'predictor' addon if/when available :).

When I look at it right now, I see it being its own Addon vs trying to integrate it within pickem (the way pickem is built right now). I will be focusing on Pickem over the next couple weeks, so I will be hitting you up to ask a bunch of silly questions lol Good to see ya btw!
