This has been implemented.

There is a new option: Options >> AMS Options >> Article Page TAB >> About Author: Max Message Length (default is set to 2000 which is the existing max limit)

The Core XenForo USER DataWriter (which AMS extends for this purpose) will throw the standard DataWriter character limit error message (this is not something I can change to use a different phrase)
