That is a dynamic phrase, meaning that data is passed into the phrase via a placeholder.

When you see {...} in a phrase, those are placeholders in which dynamic data is passed into that phrase. This allows you to have a single phrase instead of having 20 versions of the same phrase for 20 different content types for example. XenForo uses this A LOT as do most addons.

{item_type} is a placeholder within that phrase.

Phrase: xa_rms_looking_for_a_specific_item_type

Phrase text: Looking for a specific {item_type}?

How this dynamic phrase is used in RMS.

{{ phrase('xa_rms_looking_for_a_specific_item_type', {'item_type': $itemType}) }}

As you can see, data is passed into the phrase, in this case, the $itemType variable is being passed into the phrase via the item_type placeholder.

The actual Item Type (brand, item, restaurant, store etc) is passed in, not another phrase (just like what XF does with thread types in a lot of dynamic phrases).

Hope that makes sense, I've yet to have coffee this morning!
