Is it possible for the home page be limited to selected categories? If not, could there be a way for making that happen?

Limit home page categories

You can with Modular Layout Index (Modular Index is like a Portal that you create modules of content based on categories) , but not with the regular paginated Index. IIRC, there is an existing suggestion for adding a category chooser for the regular Index (might be for showcase tho).
