Is there a way to disable the unread count completely for all users?

Yes, you can disable it globally (for all users) OR each individual user has the ability to disable it themselves (this allows those that want it to have it and those that don't to not have it).
GLOBAL = Admin CP >> Applications >> Showcase >> General Options TAB >> Uncheck the Enable Unviewed Items count on Nav Tab OPTION
Individually = Browsing Preferences settings
GLOBAL = Admin CP >> Applications >> Showcase >> General Options TAB >> Uncheck the Enable Unviewed Items count on Nav Tab OPTION
