Is there any way to include sold ads and/or expired ads in the category display without having to select a filter?

Not without quite a bit of development. All of the programming code is geared towards only fetching OPEN ads by default and to view other Ad Status (Closed, Sold, Expired), you need to use the Filter System.

You could maybe add a widget that displays recently sold items?
