Implemented Season Management vs Pools having their own weeks/games

Im opening this up for discussion as its something I want to do, however, it will effect the past (History), so for those of you that keep historical data, it will probably require some manual updating on your part post upgrade. I won't know the FULL effects on the historical stuff until I really dig into it tho.

This is a much needed change to Pickem IMO. I personally don't care about past season stuff as we have a Hall of Fame thread anyway that contains data from when we did things manual, at Yahoo, at ESPN etc..

Anyway, sound off either way to let me know if its a concern or just do it :)

I'd find this useful and don't really care for past season Pickem data other than a list of previous winners/top 3.

One thing that would save me a load of work and is related to this, is the central management of seasons... So one set of game entry which would be available for use in Pickem, Survivor, Sportsbook (and obviously my own custom usage case) :D

It is just not possible. The Game Management may APPEAR to look the same on the outside, but it isn't even remotely close to the same inner workings. There is a REASON why Survivor is its OWN addon, and not a pickem pool type. The code required to do things is so drastically different that there was just NO WAY to make things work together. Just the saving a the score of a game is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY different between pickem and survivor. Different things need to happen and they can't happen at the same time together, so its not possible for them to SHARE the same thing. I can't explain it any easier than this without spending several hours explaining code and I am not going to do that lol

I figured that would most probably be the case :)

It's not a biggy to manage them separately (in some cases, it's good to do so).

Trust me, if it is even remotely possible, I WILL (AND DO) find a way to do it as I use this stuff and have to do things the same way as everyone else, so time saving is HUGE for me.

The modification make sense and has tremendous value -- file me under "the cost of some or all of the past season data is outweighed by the benefit of the change" header.

I've already started entering data for this year; but even if that's lost, it's worth it.

My vote is to just give'r Bob!

I've been running my site since '98 and have gone through so many changes that I don't think any of my members are going to have a hissy fit on losing some in the past contest data.

Well maybe 1 of the 3 left might.

:)

Mine really only care about who got 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for a given pool in a given season lol

I think it's a great idea Bob and I'd like to thank you for your hard work and dedication.

As far as past seasons go, this is my first so It would not affect me.

I can't understand why some would want historical. Once a pool is done, everyone knows the winner. I can't imagine doing back to dig up the winner and results from a couple years ago.

Its almost August, so once mid-August or so, I won't be touching this add-on. I just can't have it mess up in the middle of a season or even once it's started.

Either way, if you want to take it in a new direction, and if people don't like it, they shouldn't upgrade.

There are user criteria based on historical data such as correct picks, incorrect picks, weekly winners, pool winners etc. Some admins have created trophies or promotions based on this historical data and I have to take that into consideration when doing anything with the addon that effects any current functionality (which is why I asked as losing data DOES effect this functionality).

Gotcha. I don't user trophies, or promotions for this. That makes sense now.

So in order to keep the promotions and such, we'd have to manually do it?

Awesome you thought about that part.

It won't take away any trophy's or promotions that were already awarded, it would just effect any future ones... ie, 500 correct picks and you are 15 away from getting it, then upgrade the addon, it wipes out all history and now you are 500 away from getting it. I HOPE to avoid that, but not sure if I can. I think most will appreciate the more powerful administration vs preserving a couple years worth of historical data that most delete after the season anyway lol

Not concerned about past data, and have confidence that whatever option you choose Bob will be the correct one.

OK, just a heads up for anyone that is WAITING on this. You should probably just move forward with the current version as its going to take me A LOT longer than expected due to several challenges that I am faced with on this (because of different pool types and spreads etc). I now fully remember WHY I did it the way I did in the first place lol. I fully expect to have a NEW version sometime this year, I just can't promise that it will be ready to use before the NFL regular season. Wished I had better news on this, but its just extremely complex with all the different factors that come into play between pool types and settings vs sharing a game across multiple pools in which team a in Pool 1 wins, yet loses in pool 2 because Pool 2 is against the spread, then the POINTS are different because Pool 1 gives 2 points for a home win where Pool 2 gives .5 points for a home win... so ya, there is some MAJOR complex things that require a lot of complex code that doesn't just write itself.

ya I know... blah blah blah.. just shut up and get it done already lol

PS.. I'll probably push out a maintenance release next week, so if there are any bugs or issues that anyone needs dealt with, let me know ASAP!
