Hello,

For an article category I have not defined a forum in which an article would automatically create a discussion. If on an article of this category in the moderation options I click on change discussion and fill in the URL of an existing discussion, what will happen? Are existing comments transferred to the discussion? Are they deleted? Nothing changes for them? Will the discussion properly link to the article?

The "Change discussion thread" feature does not have anything to do with the Category Option to automatically create a discussion thread. That category option only ever comes into play during the initial creation of the Article and since the Article is in the queue, the Article has already created, so no, that category option has nothing to do with the "Change discussion thread" feature.

If the thread is a standard discussion thread (Thread Type = 'discussion'), then the "Change discussion thread" function will associate the discussion thread with the Article, just like it will associate the discussion thread with a Resource (its the same exact feature that is in the XenForo Resource manager). If the discussion thread is not a standard discussion thread, the "Change discussion thread" function will throw an error.

Comments have nothing to do with the "Change discussion thread" feature, so No, No, Yes. If you NEED different behavior, then that will require customization.

Will the discussion properly link to the article?

Yes, just like it "properly" links to a Resource.

This is the EXACT feature that is in the XFRM (works exactly the same way). The behaviors are the same, the code is the same, the design is the same etc etc etc.. there is nothing different in behaviors (on purpose).
